Försäkringskassan explained for expats
Försäkringskassan is Sweden's social insurance agency. It administers benefits like parental leave, sickness compensation, and childcare allowance — not healthcare itself (that is regionernas patient fees and high-cost protection).
When do you qualify?
You typically need to be insured in Sweden, which usually means living here with the intent to stay and working or having a qualifying connection to the Swedish social insurance system. EU citizens may be covered under coordination rules during their first months.
Key benefits expats ask about
Parental leave (föräldrapenning)
Sweden offers generous shared parental leave. Both parents can take paid leave tied to the child's birth or adoption. The amount depends on your income and how many days you claim at the higher or lower rate.
Sickness benefit (sjukpenning)
If you cannot work due to illness, you report sick to your employer and Försäkringskassan. A doctor's certificate is required after seven calendar days.
Child allowance (barnbidrag)
Automatic monthly payment per child living in Sweden. You do not need to apply if you are registered — but verify your children are linked to your case.
How to register
- Get your personnummer from Skatteverket.
- Create an account at forsakringskassan.se with BankID.
- Submit any required forms if you are newly insured from abroad.
- Keep your employer and address details up to date.
EU/EEA newcomers
If you worked in another EU country before moving, bring your EHIC and employment history. You may need form E104 or equivalent to prove prior insurance periods.
