Yes — you can start working in Sweden without a full personnummer, but your employer and Skatteverket need a way to identify you for tax and social contributions. The experience is smoother with planning.

Short answer

  • EU/EEA citizens can often work immediately and apply for personnummer after arrival.
  • Non-EU workers need a valid work permit; employers may use a coordination number until personnummer is issued.
  • Payroll and taxes still run — your employer registers you with Skatteverket.

What works without a personnummer

| Task | Possible? | |------|-----------| | Signed employment contract | Yes | | Salary paid to foreign IBAN | Often yes (temporary) | | Swedish bank account | Limited — see bank guide | | BankID | No | | Full healthcare registration | Partial until personnummer | | Swish | No |

Coordination number (samordningsnummer)

Skatteverket may issue a samordningsnummer when you need to interact with authorities but do not yet qualify for a personnummer. Employers use it for tax reporting. It is not a substitute long-term — get your personnummer as soon as you qualify.

What employers expect from you

Bring your passport, residence permit, and employment contract on day one. Ask HR which tax form you need (usually 1.1 or similar for newcomers). Confirm whether salary can go to a foreign account until your Swedish bank is ready.

Practical advice

Do not delay Skatteverket because you already started work. The personnummer unlocks BankID, which unlocks everything else in Swedish digital life. Treat the first month as a sprint to get registered.
